Baseball Day at Wartburg Hits a Home Run with Yankee Legend Willie Randolph and Current Star Oswaldo Cabrera
Mount Vernon, NY, (August 25, 2025) Wartburg’s campus was filled with the sights and sounds of America’s favorite pastime on Friday, August 22, as residents, families, and community members came together to celebrate Senior Citizens Day with Baseball Day at Wartburg. The celebration featured a very special meet-and-greet with Yankee legend Willie Randolph and current player Oswaldo Cabrera, marking the first time professional baseball players have visited the 159-year-old campus.
The event kicked off with a rousing performance by the award winning Ice Cold Performing Arts Drumline from Mount Vernon, setting the tone for a festive afternoon. Randolph and Cabrera spent time inside the Adult Day Center, engaging personally with participants before joining the outdoor festivities, where they mingled with residents, staff, and neighbors.
The atmosphere was reminiscent of a classic block party, complete with baseball-themed games, face painting, music, and all the stadium favorites - from hot dogs and popcorn to ice cream. Wartburg was also honored to welcome Mount Vernon Mayor Shawn Patterson-Howard, who joined residents and local youth in celebrating the day.
During the program, David J. Gentner, Wartburg President & CEO, presented Randolph and Cabrera with a special proclamation recognizing their visit and contributions to the spirit of community. The proclamation was signed by CEO Gentner and Wartburg Adult Day participant Faheem Atkins, underscoring the day’s intergenerational spirit.
Baseball Day was made possible by the dedication of nearly 50 volunteers representing more than 15 community organizations who came together to serve food, run activities, and ensure the event was a joyful success.
Participating partners included:
- Boys and Girls Club of Mount Vernon
- Children’s Village
